Mike Balcain - Artist Statement

I am a lifelong art lover who started my journey in 2017 with sketching and watercolour, switching to oils in 2023. I am inspired by the impressionists to follow my passion for creating my own personal vision.

The diverse subject matter of Canada’s landscape encourages the ability to examine and interpret, on canvas, what the landscape means to me.  For many years I often painted “en pleine air” while standing amongst the quietness of the weeds, shrubs, trees and open air.  Those times were especially memorable for my development as an artist.

Painting is an extension of my love of travel. I enjoy spending time on the water and seeing marine animals and other wildlife in their natural habitat, and it is these moments of experiencing both the quietude and magnitude of nature that I aim to capture in my art.

Inspired by my travels across Canada, my work merges the raw, rugged energy of waterfalls and rock formations with the delicate beauty of botanical life. Through a signature use of cool, vivid and rich tactile texture, I translate the atmosphere of these places into immersive, high contrast visual experience.
